Our sweet Quinny was born with a head full of chocolate brown hair and, at 12 weeks old, hasn't lost one lock of it. However, as his head has grown almost 3 inches since birth, that sweet, whispy baby hair that once looked like a perfectly coiffed pixie cut
now has a tendency to stick straight up and look rather unruly and downright crazy most of the time.
So pronounced are Quinn's "bad hair days" that it is often the main topic of conversation, not only with strangers in the mall but also with people we see on a regular basis:
"When are you going to take that baby for a haircut?"
"His hair adds 3 inches to his height!"
"He'll look like a hippy by 6 months with that long hair."
"He could be an Elvis impersonator!" (huh???)
"That baby needs some product in his hair."
"My (friend's-cousin's-neighbor's-uncle-twice-removed - or whatever other random relation) had a baby with long hair like that - he had his first haircut at 2 months old! They really CAN cut baby's hair that young!
"You really should get his hair cut before it gets in his eyes." or
"You don't want people to think he's a GIRL, do you?" (truth be told, most strangers DO assume he's a girl, especially when he's curled up in his sling and clothing is not visible.)
His sister had the same hair but hers was almost always in a bow or lacy headband, so apparently it did not bother people so much? Or maybe it's because he is a boy and boys are not supposed to have "long" hair?? I admit to trying to calm the crazy by meticulously combing post-bath and smoothing down with a bit of hand lotion only have have it look like a cross between a bad comb-over and a 1950's style Pompadour! So while I appreciate all the concern for my sweet boy's self-image I must inform all the well-intentioned commentators that I will not be cutting his hair (nor using some baby version of Axe on him) - not now or any time soon.
While it may be "crazy" and "wild" looking much of the time, this hair is part of his babyness! It is endearing - part of what makes him uniquely Quinn. No generic newborn look for this boy, even on day 1!
His sweet, squishy babyhood is already racing by with lightning speed. So I embrace the crazy hair, knowing that all too soon he will have tamely trimmed toddler hair and I'll long for the days when his hair tickled my nose as I held him on my chest....
Not to say that you won't ever catch me licking my finger to slick down an unruly strand now and then! ;-)
